Zombie is most useful in a Giovanni combat or bruise-and-bleed deck—especially one using Potence, superior Fortitude, or other tools to force close range and survive several rounds—because its automatic 1 damage can accumulate while also serving as a temporary blood bank; however, it is usually too slow and conditional for ordinary Giovanni bleed or stealth decks, since it costs a blood, does nothing at long range, and requires an extra action to convert into only two blood. There is no exact strictly superior replacement with both persistent damage and blood gain, but for combat impact cards such as **Hellhound** or **War Ghoul** are generally stronger retainers, while for Giovanni’s main game plan, bleed cards such as **Govern the Unaligned**, **Conditioning**, or **Scouting Mission** are much more valuable; consequently, Zombie should see play only in a dedicated close-range combat or attrition build, and even there usually as a one-of or experimental inclusion rather than a staple.
