Thrown Gate is mainly useful in Potence-heavy combat or rush decks—especially weenie/medium-capacity Potence or combat-bleed decks that need bloodless ranged maneuvers while still dealing damage—but its 1R/2R damage is modest and it does not provide the disruption or staying power usually wanted from combat cards; Torn Signpost is generally better for close-range Potence damage, Immortal Grapple is usually better for controlling opposing hand strikes, and dedicated maneuver or prevention solutions may be preferable depending on the deck, so Thrown Gate should normally see play only as a metagame choice, a budget option, or in a deck specifically relying on ranged strikes, rather than as a staple.
