About Sheepdog

Sheepdog, Action, designed by Jeff Laubenstein first released in September 2007 in the set Lords of the Night.

Sheepdog is most useful in a blood-hungry, high-capacity vampire deck—especially one using expensive vampires, strong untap effects, or multi-action tools such as Freak Drive, which can offset the lost normal unlock—but paying an action and effectively losing the vampire for the following turn makes four blood quite expensive; it is generally weaker than recurring sources such as The Coven or Hunting Ground, while Giant’s Blood is much better when its condition is met because it provides a dramatically larger refill without consuming a minion action, so Sheepdog should usually not see competitive play except as a budget, thematic, or metagame-specific one-of in decks that urgently need blood and can exploit untaps.

The "does not unlock as normal" effect is redundant with being infernal. If the minion is infernal, his controller can still pay a pool to unlock him. [LSJ 20050114]
