Shadow Step is most useful in an **Obtenebration combat deck** that needs to control range, especially one built around close-range damage or effects that work best at a chosen range. Its basic `[obt] Maneuver` is serviceable, but the superior ability is expensive: burning 2 blood to set the range can be worthwhile when it decisively enables a combat package, though it is usually less efficient than dedicated range-control cards such as **Taste of Vitae**’s combat-support alternatives or discipline-specific maneuvers like **Earth Meld** (for Protean vampires) and **Flash** (for Celerity vampires). Those alternatives are not direct upgrades in every deck, but they generally offer range control without Shadow Step’s steep blood cost. Include Shadow Step only if your deck has Obtenebration, relies on a specific range, and lacks better in-discipline options; otherwise, its basic maneuver alone usually isn’t enough to justify a slot.
