Adaptability, Combat, designed by Hannibal King first released in October 1996 in the set Sabbat and was printed exactly in 2 different ways.

Adaptability is most useful in a Protean-based combat or intercept-combat deck whose vampires expect to fight opponents capable of delivering aggravated strike damage, such as aggravated hand strikes or weapons, because its superior effect can completely blank that damage and its inferior effect lets you handle it with ordinary prevention; however, it is highly situational, costs 1 blood, and does nothing against normal damage or aggravated damage that is not caused by the opposing minion’s strike, so it is usually weaker than broader combat-defense options such as Skin Trap, which can prevent damage from more sources and remains useful in more matchups. It can be a reasonable metagame choice if aggravated combat is common, particularly in a dedicated Protean combat deck, but it generally should not see maindeck play unless your local environment contains a significant amount of aggravated strike damage.
