Surge, Power, designed by Heather V. Kreiter first released in April 2006 in the set Nights of Reckoning.

Surge is best in an imbued wall or combat deck that expects to block frequently and face large amounts of ordinary combat damage, especially from Potence, guns, or ally combat; for one conviction it provides up to three damage prevention, but it is restricted to the imbued, cannot prevent aggravated damage, requires the imbued to be involved in combat or acting as a reaction, and unused counters disappear at the end of the action. There is no universally better direct replacement, although cards that provide permanent intercept, combat avoidance, or aggravated-damage prevention are generally more valuable, while ordinary damage-prevention options such as armor-style effects are preferable when available because they do not consume conviction so inefficiently. Surge should see play as a few copies in a dedicated imbued defensive or combat deck, particularly in a damage-heavy metagame, but it is not an automatic inclusion: in toolbox or low-conviction decks, cards that improve blocking,
