Smoke Grenade is most useful in a defensive toolbox, intercept, or stealth-bleed deck whose vampires can reliably establish long range and want a cheap emergency escape from unfavorable combat, especially against decks relying on close-range strikes or powerful combat packages; however, it is quite narrow because it occupies an equipment slot, can be used only at long range, requires your strike to be the combat-ending strike, and burns after use. It is generally inferior to simply playing combat cards such as Dodge or Telepathic Misdirection when those disciplines are available, while gun decks usually prefer a real weapon such as Ivory Bow or Sniper Rifle that helps win combat rather than merely escape it. Smoke Grenade can be a reasonable one-of in a metagame with frequent close-combat threats, but it should not normally see play as a core card because its conditions are too restrictive and its opportunity cost is high.
