Expiate is mainly useful in a dedicated imbued rush/combat deck that can reliably force close range for two consecutive rounds—typically with cards such as Immortal Grapple, presses, and combat-strengthening effects—and is willing to sacrifice one of its own imbued to permanently remove a dangerous opposing vampire or ally; however, paying all 5 conviction and losing your imbued makes it highly inefficient, while the opponent can often prevent the required second close-range round, end combat, or avoid combat altogether. For most imbued decks, Immortal Grapple is the better combat card because it reliably secures close range and supports repeated combat, while ordinary damage and combat-control cards are generally preferable to Expiate’s all-or-nothing exchange. Expiate should therefore see play only as a narrow, metagame-dependent inclusion in a dedicated self-sacrificial combat strategy, not as a generally strong card.
