Playing for Keeps benefits an aggressive deck that can reliably oust its prey, especially stealth-bleed or political decks, but only in a game explicitly played for ante: its reward is winning actual ante cards, not gaining additional pool, cards in hand, or victory points. Despite the listed “0” cost, its printed text sets the cost to X, the number of Methuselahs currently in the game, so playing it at a full five-player table costs 5 pool—a substantial investment for no direct improvement to your position. It also applies to every surviving Methuselah whose prey is ousted, not just its controller, so opponents can benefit without paying that cost. There is no meaningful direct replacement for its unusual ante effect, but Dreams of the Sphinx is generally a much better master-slot investment for card flow and temporary hand-size flexibility, while Information Highway can help an aggressive deck influence vampires faster.
